(Trends Wide) — Police are searching for four inmates who escaped from a Mississippi jail over the weekend, one of whom allegedly killed a man on his escape route.
The four inmates were pronounced missing from the Raymond Detention Center early Sunday around 12:30 a.m. after officers conducted a routine count, Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said at a news conference. which was held on Monday.
The jail was closed and the agents found two cracks, one in the area where the inmates were staying and another in the ceiling.
Jones said the four inmates are believed to have climbed through the roof around 8:00 p.m. Saturday night, camped there, and escaped at different times.
Police later identified the four individuals as Dylan Arrington, 22; Casey Grayson, 24; Corey Harrison, 22; and Jerry Raynes, 51.
Since their escape, the fugitives have been linked to two stolen vehicles and the death of a man.
Arrington, one of the fugitives, is believed to be the suspect who shot and killed a man in Jackson as he fled the area. On Monday night, officers responded to a scene where they found an unconscious black man who had been shot multiple times, Jackson Police Chief James E. Davis told Trends Wide affiliate WAPT.
Investigators say the man had pulled over to the side of the road to help Arrington, who appeared to have crashed a motorcycle he had stolen moments earlier.
Authorities believe Arrington killed the man and then stole his vehicle. “Please proceed with caution when approaching this vehicle,” Davis said. “This suspect is considered to be armed and dangerous,” he added.
Jones believes one of the men fled to Texas after a witness reported a Hinds County Public Works vehicle crashed into a gate around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. The vehicle was later found more than 400 miles (643 kilometers) away abandoned in Spring Valley Village, Texas.
Another vehicle was stolen from the area around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, and Jones says he believes it is also related to the fugitives. The vehicle was reportedly stolen by two unknown men and then seen Monday morning heading to Rankin County, Jones said.
As of Tuesday, none of the individuals had been captured.
“We are actively and aggressively looking for these individuals, and we hope to have them back in custody soon,” Jones said.
