A state of discontent prevailed on Arab social media sites after leaks showing Israeli soldiers assaulting Palestinian prisoners in detention centers. Some activists said that these violations represent a general policy against all prisoners and reflect the nature of the occupation.
The Israeli army is investigating soldiers at the Sde Teiman camp after reports of abuses against Palestinian prisoners inside the notorious detention center.
Local press reports that a reservist has been charged on suspicion of abusing prisoners in prison, and five other soldiers have been charged on suspicion of sexually assaulting a detainee with an object, among other violations.
Channel 12 Israel published a shocking clip showing part of the assault on Palestinian prisoners in that prison, where soldiers took one of the prisoners and assaulted him, using their shields to avoid the cameras.
The channel says that the Palestinian prisoner was transferred to the hospital hours later, bleeding, due to an object being inserted into his body. A lie detector test showed that two of the soldiers were not telling the truth.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a hardline figure, expressed his anger at the leak of the clip, not the act itself, saying, “An immediate criminal investigation must be conducted to find out who leaked the video that caused serious damage to Israel internationally.”
In the United States, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said, “We have seen the video and reports of sexual assaults on detainees. They are horrific, and the human rights of detainees must be respected in all cases.”
“When there are alleged violations, the Government of Israel must take steps to investigate and, if appropriate, hold accountable those alleged to have committed violations,” Miller added.
They know they won't be held accountable.
On social media, activists expressed their anger at the degree of disrespect for the law that Israel has reached, while others said that “the reckoning is near.”
Abu Siraj commented, “We expected many violations against Palestinian prisoners, but seeing this scene with our own eyes is painful, heartbreaking and soul-crushing.” While Zahrat Al-Yasemin said, “All detainees are like this, and the reckoning is inevitable. God is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.”
As for Sireen Al-Ghafouri, she commented on these practices by saying, “The most morally corrupt army in the world.” Odem asked, “Are we human beings? Is this appropriate for these people? Have the laws that protect humans as they protect animals ended in Europe?”
In turn, an account called “Difficult to Reach” said, “If it weren’t for the assurance of the Islamic nation’s silence, they would not have dared to spread such atrocities.”
Two days ago, a recent UN report said that the organization had received documented reports of widespread abuse, torture, sexual assault and rape in the Israeli Sde Teiman prison under horrific inhumane conditions, and that at least 53 Palestinians had died as a result over the past ten months.
