The Spanish newspaper El Mundo confirmed that the Israeli army is using a number of mercenaries contracted with private military companies in order to perform military services, some of which are linked to indirect support for the war on… Gaza.
The newspaper spoke to one of them, a former soldier in the Spanish army, Pedro Diaz Flores Corrales (27 years old), who participates as a mercenary to support the Israeli forces. He previously participated in Iraq and the Russian-Ukrainian war and moved from there to Israel.
El Mundo explained that a “small army” of mercenaries operates inside Israel, and they have been contracted to carry out special tasks.
Profitable business
The former soldier in the Spanish army told El Mundo that his work with the Israeli army is very financially profitable, as he receives 3,900 euros per week, not to mention compensation for other supplementary tasks.
Corrales was hired as a mercenary by Raven and Global CST, two private military companies contracted by the Israeli army to hire mercenaries to carry out military missions.
The mercenary soldier told the Spanish newspaper that he moved to war in Ukraine out of respect for his “principles” in defense of Ukraine against the Russian invasion, but with Israel his goal is purely material.
He claimed that he does not participate in the war directly, and his role – and that of his fellow mercenaries – is limited to providing security support to Israeli army convoys in the Gaza Strip.
Corrales added that one of his duties is also to ensure the security of checkpoints and access control on the borders of Gaza as well as Jordan, and he is currently working in the occupied Golan.
A small army of mercenaries
Corrales stressed that there are many private military companies operating in Israel, and they share tasks among themselves.
El Mundo said that she saw pictures of Pedro surrounded by mercenaries of different nationalities, including French, Germans, Albanians, and even American Marines or members of the Special Forces who fought in Iraq, Afghanistan, Mali, or Kosovo.
The Spanish newspaper added that these elements form what resembles a small army that moves from one war to another and has become professional in this mission, and may be assigned to fight at times, or to support the fighting forces.
Corrales explained that his departure from Ukraine came because he no longer received his salary regularly, in addition to the weakness of their means of protection.
El Mundo confirmed that Corrales no longer uses humanitarian arguments in what he is doing now in Israel, as he did in Ukraine, where he said he went to confront Russian injustice, and he does not currently refrain from justifying the Israeli choice.
When the newspaper asked him how he felt while supporting an army targeting the civilian population in Gaza, the Spanish mercenary replied that he blamed the Islamic Resistance Movement (agitation) responsibility, and reiterated that he is here for the money, “So I came. They pay very well, provide good equipment, and work here is quiet.”
