They point out García Luna of collaborating with the Sinaloa Cartel even in jail

The Prosecutor’s Office for the Eastern District of New York maintains that Genaro García Luna lied on several occasions about the time in which he allegedly collaborated with the Sinaloa Cartel as well as the date on which he ceased to be the link with the Mexican government.

The former head of the Secretary of Security, during the mandate of Felipe Calderón, asked that four of the five charges against him be dropped, which range from participating in a criminal enterprise to conspiracy to import cocaine into the United States.

According to the indictment, the former official used his position as a member of the Mexican government to help the organization that was led by Joaquín el Chapo Guzmán, in exchange for multimillion-dollar bribes.

“Specifically, the indictment alleges that between January 2001 and July 2020, the defendant conspired with members of the Sinaloa Cartel to import large quantities of narcotics into the United States,” reads the prosecution’s memorandum against the former secretary’s motion. .

In other words, the defendant continued with this possible criminal conduct until after his arrest, which was in December 2019.

According to the document, the New York prosecutor’s office also indicated that in 2018, after moving to US soil, García Luna lied about this conduct in his attempt to become a US citizen.

“Incidentally, during his post-arrest interview, the defendant repeatedly lied about his involvement in the conspiracy, including denying that he had ever met with anyone from any drug-trafficking group,” the prosecution said.

Another of the lies, the prosecution said, was that he denied having any knowledge that someone who worked for him had met with groups of traffickers, as well as having had any telephone conversations with drug traffickers.

He also denied having helped the Beltrán-Leyva Organization, which was part of the Sinaloa Cartel.

“The defendant’s lies show that he never intended to make a clean break with the Sinaloa Cartel or give up the objectives of the conspiracy,” the document states.

The defense of the former secretary has asked that the charges against him be dismissed, since in his opinion the crimes have prescribed.

“Even if the Court found that the defendant did indeed renounce the conspiracy in 2012, his lies restored his link to the Sinaloa Cartel within the statute of limitations. For all of these reasons, the Court must deny Defendant’s motion to dismiss.”
