They seek 15 years in prison for attacking women with acid

Describing it as an “extremely disgusting” act, the deputy Ana Laura Bernal Camarena (PT) proposed increasing the years in prison for those who injure women with acids, corrosive, chemical or flammable substances.

The legislator proposed to modify articles 85 and 297 Bis of the Federal Criminal Code, to impose from six to 15 years in prison and a fine of 500,000 times the daily value of the Measurement and Update Unit (UMA), to whoever commits this illegal act —he said— emphasizes the hatred that exists towards women and is considered “one of the most misogynistic and horrifying acts against a woman, after femicide.”

Aggravating

The deputy detailed in her initiative that the prison sentence could be increased, up to two thirds, when the aggressor is related to the victim by consanguinity, affinity; marriage, concubinage or a sentimental, affective or trust relationship.

The document, sent to the Justice Commission, highlighted that only 10 of the 32 entities establish attacks with acids and corrosive substances due to gender violence in their local penal codes.

The initiative recalled that the Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) pointed out that culturally women are considered inferior or subordinate based on gender stereotypes that encourage violence against them.

And he contextualized that, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), of the approximately 46.5 million women aged 15 and over who live in our country, 30.7 million, that is, 66.1%, have faced some type of violence, at least once in his life.
