Under the above heading, “Argumente-e-Facti” published the text of a meeting about the possibility of an agreement between Washington and Moscow to spare the world the danger of a breakdown of strategic nuclear armament.
And the meeting said: After the inauguration, the administration of the forty-sixth US President Joseph Biden will deal first and foremost with the issue of extending the Treaty on Measures to Reduce and Limit Strategic Offensive Weapons (START-3). Anthony Blinken, who has been nominated for the secretary of state, spoke about it at a hearing at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
About that, he said Researcher at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, “Valdai” forum expert Andrei Baklitsky:
In the four years of Trump’s presidency, virtually no arms control treaties remained between Russia and the United States, which were an important part of the security system built by the two largest nuclear powers. START-3 is the only thing from this system that still works. Without it, we would really go back to the run-up to the Caribbean crisis, with all the risks involved.
But, in any case, regardless of how long the agreement will be extended, Russia and the United States should think about what to do next. START-3 can only continue to operate until 2026. It cannot be extended further. That is, there is a need for a new large treaty to control strategic weapons.
Blinken described Russia as the main threat to the United States.
Nothing new in what we heard here. Russia’s position in relation to the United States remains the same. However, international security depends to a large extent on the relationship between the two states, and the new Biden administration is professional enough to understand that. So, at first we will negotiate. Although this does not negate the fact that the White House, of course, will try to complicate our lives, in many ways. The Americans will become more active in the Commonwealth of Independent States, and the pressure on “Northern Torrent -2” will continue. But this will not be anything new for us.
