They will premiere clown opera “Santino. The Way of the Magician”

The possibility of a flower appearing in the hand or practicing levitation are some tricks that will enrich the opera clown Santino. El camino del Mago in the premiere performance in Mexico City on December 18 at the Teatro Metropólitan, at 5:00 p.m.

Fire, wind and smoke are part of the special effects devised by Adrián Fox, a magician who trained self-taught in this profession, to which he has dedicated himself for more than three decades.

Although magic is already within reach on any digital platform, most people are limited to doing tricks and at Santino the goal is to help tell a story, as well as surprise the viewer, says Fox.

Santino is a character who loses his magic as a child and must travel to the Stream of Eternity to recover it. The show arose from the collaboration between Emiliano Cárdenas, author of the script and stage director, and Felipe Pérez Santiago, composer and director of Vórtice Orquesta.

More than 40 musicians and seven characters on stage, including singers Jenny Beaujean and Juan Pablo Villa, participate in this show for the whole family. Its world debut took place on April 28 at the Auditorium of the University Cultural Complex, of the Meritorious Autonomous University of Puebla (BUAP).

The cast is made up of Cárdenas as Santino, Villa as Razh, Beaujean as the magician Less, Tlathui Maza as Daco, Ulises Martínez as Vitorino, Pérez Santiago as Almo and the circus artist Marlene Solano as the fairy Diana.

This new version of Santino, in addition to magic, includes aerial acts and acrobatics in a water hole. It delves into the premise that the protagonist, before waging an external battle, must fight against himself, against his deepest fears, explains the scriptwriter and stage director.

“For Santino to stop being an ordinary character and be able to recover his magic, he must know himself and be able to achieve his wishes. Less drives him on that inner journey where Vitorino represents his darkest side ”, adds Cárdenas.

At first Santino is delighted, beside himself, the magician wakes him up, brings him back to reality, and Razh and Daco welcome him. Less prepares a potion for Santino to go to the Stream of Eternity, space of death and rebirth.

The music was composed by Pérez Santiago ex profeso for this clown opera and intended for a symphony orchestra. Its sound is characterized by its great beauty and color. Beaujean, the soprano, and Villa, the tenor, sing in an invented language so that the work is universal and prone to vocal experimentation.
