Dropping your phone on the tube tracks is one way to throw off your morning commute.
Panic kicks in and you might even consider jumping down in the tracks to save your possessions yourself- but as TFL point out on every tube journey, you MUST stand behind the yellow line and never venture onto the tracks.
Attempting to retrieve your items from the tracks will not only endanger your life – but put other passengers on their journeys at risk.
Luckily a TikToker has shared how to retrieve your beloved items- and it involves an impressive (and expensive) device.
Dropping your phone on the tube tracks can ruin your journey, luckily a TikToker has shared how to retrieve your beloved possessions
The TikToker warned against retrieving your own items and instead, you should seek the help of London Underground staff members
Staff will be aware of the correct procedures and may be able to retrieve your items with a handy device
User @adildelwar posted the video to some 129 followers after dropping his air pods on the tracks.
He shared step-by-step advice on what TFL users should do, he wrote: ‘Find the help point. Press information to speak to staff.’
He warned travellers to not jump on the tracks or attempt to be a ‘hero’, and said: ‘It’s very dangerous! They have to stop the train to do it.’
He added that you may get electrocuted if you make the impromptu decision to jump down.
Instead, he shared: ‘[TFL wokers] use a long stick with a sticky end to retrieve it.’
The video then showed a TFL worker in an orange hi-vis vest kneeling towards the platform edge and swiftly retrieving his air pods with a long red stick.
He concluded the video by saying: ‘Lesson learnt! Stand way behind the yellow line! Thanks to TFL staff for their prompt support.’
The video was captioned ‘Stay WAAAYYYY behind the yellow lines’, and has since received over 370,000 views.
The handy stick TFL workers use to retrieve items is known as a ‘Track Retrieval Device’, each one reportedly costs over £1,000
The TikToker has received backlash for the video, with some users suggesting he may have thrown his air pods on the tracks himself. But the TikToker says he did not cause any intentional disruption and thanks TFL staff for their help

Over 20,000 people have liked the video and it has received over 1000 shares from potential accident-prone commuters.
One user commented: ‘I witnessed someone jump down inbetween the train and tracks the other day to get a shoe it was so scary! Do this instead!’
One user joked: ‘I know he got the DIRTIEST looks on the platform.’
To which the creator replied: ‘Not really because it took less than a minute before people could realise everything was back to usual again.’
The TikToker received some backlash for his video, with some users claiming he threw his air pods on the tracks on purpose.
In response to the comments, he said: ‘No intentional disruption. Raising track safety awareness and appreciating the helpful London Underground staff. Thanks for understanding!
While the TikToker did not reference what the device was, MyLondon previously dubbed it a ‘Track Retrieval device’.
Each one reportedly costs £1106.82, and has a plastic handle on one end with the option to attach a hook or sticky pad to pick up any dropped items.
It was also said that the staff member will need permission from the train controller before they can reunite you with your possessions.
The TFL introduced the track retriever device in 2014, after the previous year saw dropped items responsible for 195,000 items of delay.
The tool helps retrieve small, high-value items such as mobile phones, electronic devices and handbags from the track.
It is designed for staff to use from the platform edge, without staff having to cut off electricity and interrupt travel.
At the time, Nigel Holness, the then London Underground Operations Director Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines said: ‘We recognise that possessions are very valuable to people so we encourage everyone to take care of them when they’re on the platform.
‘If you drop anything of value on the track, please speak to a member of staff and we will do our best to retrieve it for you.
‘We hope that our staff, using the Track Retrieval Device, will deter customers from attempting to pick up items themselves.’
