Colin Craig-Brown was weeding the vegetable garden on his small farm near Hamilton when he discovered a giant, misshapen spud weighing 17.6lbs or nearly 8kg.

Appearing on This Morning today, he revealed the potato is set to undergo ‘DNA testing’ to prove it hasn’t been genetically modified before it can bag a Guinness World Record.

‘We’re accidental champions’, said Colin. ‘Didn’t grow it on purpose, caught us both totally unaware. We were just doing some weeding.

‘At first I thought it may have been a white sweet potato we’d grown, then I’d decided it was too big. I said “We have to get it out of the ground”. And like an angry Viking I thrust a fork into the ground and got me a mighty potato.’

Presenters Phil and Rochelle were both in hysterics at Colin’s recollection of events, with the farmer revealing he named the spud ‘Doug’ after discovering it was a potato.

‘We’ve grown lots of spuds before but never anything like this’, he said. ‘We just looked at it and said “What are we gonna do?”.

In the weeks since their unusual find on August 30, the couple’s ugly potato has become something of a celebrity around their small farm and the pair are keen have the spud certified as the world’s biggest.

A sample of the vegetable will be sent to Christchurch University for analysis before the entire potato is sent to Scotland for further inspection.

‘See this part here, that’s the bit that got chopped off’, said Colin. ‘It’s going to be sent down to Christchurch and as far as I know it’ll have the DNA analysis there and it’s somehow going to get sent to Scotland.’

Host Rochelle commented that the vegetable looked a ‘little mouldy’ but Colin explained: ‘He suffered the ravages of time, I just bunged him in the freezer’

Doug the spud is so large that Colin and his partner have resorted to pulling it around on a wheeled cart

After Phil suspected he might have been rubbing baby oil on the potato, Colin insisted: ‘Nah mate, just a bit of water, otherwise it’s all frosty’.

Viewers found the segment hilarious, with one writing: ‘Best thing I’ve ever seen on #ThisMorning …Doug the King of Potatoes!’

‘Colin is someone I’d wanna be friends with’, said another amused viewer.

‘They have spent way too much time talking about a potato on #ThisMornin’, a third commented.
