Thousands of Israelis demonstrated outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence in Jerusalem today, Saturday, calling for his resignation from the post, three days before the fourth general elections in two years.
Protesters marched through police-closed streets to traffic, carrying flags, banging drums, horns and chanting slogans calling for the 71-year-old prime minister to be removed.
The crowd was larger than other previous anti-Netanyahu protests in recent months, and Israeli media reported that the number of demonstrators reached about 20,000.
Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party is expected to come out the largest in the March 23 elections, but opinion polls expect that no party will achieve a majority in parliament or be able to form a government, which is what happened in the last three elections.
Recently, pressure has increased on Netanyahu, who is on trial for corruption, and his opponents accuse him of mismanaging the Corona virus epidemic.
But the Prime Minister hopes to obtain the necessary support to achieve a majority in Parliament after the success of the vaccination program implemented by the government to prevent the epidemic, which allowed the reopening of most economic activities after three periods of general isolation, as well as after signing normalization agreements with Arab countries.
Netanyahu faces charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust, but denies any wrongdoing.
