Thousands took to the streets of Vienna today, Saturday, to protest against restrictions imposed on public life to contain the Corona pandemic, at a time when the government held consultations on extending isolation restrictions.
The demonstrators in the city center chanted slogans calling for the departure of Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, and raised banners denouncing the imposed restrictions, while many of them did not wear masks.
Austria, with a population of 8.9 million, is imposing a general lockdown for the third time, and only allowing essential stores to open their doors.
There have been 390,000 cases of coronavirus and 7,000 deaths since the outbreak began last year.
Public health experts said after a meeting with government officials that infection rates are so high that it is not possible to consider easing restrictions at this stage, and the government is scheduled to announce its next steps on Sunday.
