The second season of “Shifting Gears” will delve into the personal life of Matt (Tim Allen) as he navigates his grief over an ex-wife while exploring a new romance with Eve (Jenna Elfman). This follows the season one finale, which saw Matt and Eve share a surprise kiss while a potential relationship stalled between his daughter, Riley (Kat Dennings), and Gabe (Seann William Scott).
In the season premiere, airing October 1, Matt wrestles with his feelings for Eve before Charlotte (Nancy Travis) convinces him to attend a grief support group. Simultaneously, Riley grapples with her own unresolved romantic tension with Gabe. The premiere will also feature a special “Home Improvement” reunion, with Allen’s former co-stars Patricia Richardson, Richard Karn, and Debbe Dunning making guest appearances. While details of their roles remain under wraps, it is teased that they will support Matt in an “unexpected way.”
The following episode, scheduled for October 8, sees Matt and Eve embark on their first date, only to discover they have conflicting expectations. Guest stars for this episode will include Los Angeles Dodger Mookie Betts and Lilly Singh.
Showrunner Michelle Nader described the evolving dynamic between Matt and Eve as “a little bit of a roller-coaster,” noting that “it’s interesting to watch their relationship develop.”
Jenna Elfman, who plays Eve, also shared her enthusiasm for the new season, praising the quality of the scripts. “I’m blown away by the writing this year. The stories are sincerely hilarious,” she said. “I’m very excited for everyone at home because I know they’re going to have a great laugh with their family.”
“Shifting Gears” returns to ABC on Wednesday, October 1, at 8 p.m. ET, and will be available for streaming on Hulu the following day.
