A sponsorship row almost resulted in the abandonment of Wednesday night’s super welterweight showdown between Tim Tszyu and Dennis Hogan in Newcastle.
In a sensation, Irishman Hogan had refused to fight Tszyu in their scheduled super welterweight showdown in Newcastle because of a sponsorship stand-off.
Hogan has been adamant all week that unless he is allowed to wear his betting agency sponsor’s name – PointsBet – on his shorts that he will not enter the ring on Wednesday night.

With the fight heavily sponsored by rival bookmaking organisation Sportsbet, promoters had hoped to resolve the issue but Hogan maintains the fight will not go ahead if he cannot publicly support his sponsor.
The bout is scheduled to take place just after 10pm AEDT.
‘I’m not coming out unless I’ve got my sponsors on there,’ Hogan said at Tuesday’s weigh-in, before his management team doubled down with the threat on Wednesday night.
‘That’s the deal that we’ve done. Everybody is able to wear their sponsors.
‘It is unacceptable so I’ll be wearing them, or I won’t be there.
‘They supported me through the pandemic…I’ll wear them now when I’m about to have my glorious moment.’
The pre-fight issue was eventually resolved after lawyers were called to intervene.
Promoter Matt Rose phoned his team of lawyers and the matter was quickly settled.
The tension further adds to the anticipation ahead of the fight at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre.
