Together, again, “the three amigos” will represent Mexico at the Oscars

Mexico and Argentina will say ‘present’ at the 95th Oscar delivery on March 12 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, with the films of the Mexican trio made up of Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro González Iñárritu —”the three amigos” as they are called eh Hollywood— as well as one of the Argentine Santiago Mitre, who compete for the statuette in various categories, the Film Academy announced on Tuesday.

The Mexican filmmakers will share the ceremony together, after 16 years, when they competed in the 79th ceremony of 2007 with “Babel”, with seven nominations (it won Best Soundtrack), “Pan’s Labyrinth”, nominated in six categories, from which won 3, including Photography and Makeup; and “Children of Man,” with three nominations left at that. That year two Mexicans competed for the Oscar for Best Photography: Guillermo Navarro, with “Pan’s Labyrinth” and Emanuel Lubezky, with “Children of Man.”

“Argentina, 1985”, Miter’s film about the trial of the juntas of the last military dictatorship of the South American country, will compete in the category of Best International Film.

The film, which has just won the Golden Globe, will face “All Quiet Front” from Germany; “Close”, from Belgium; “EO” from Poland and “The Quiet Girl” from Ireland.

For his part, Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro for “The Shape of Water,” earned a nomination in the Best Animated Film category for his version of “Pinocchio,” Carlo Collodi’s classic tale starring Tom Hanks about the wooden puppet that turns into a child.

“Pinocchio” will take on Joel Crawford’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”; “The Sea Beast” by Chris Williams; Domee Shi’s “Red” and Dean Fleischer Camp’s “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.”

Meanwhile, the filmmaker Cuarón, who four years ago swept the Oscar ceremony with “Roma”, will once again seek an award in the category of Best Fiction Short Film as producer of “Le Pupille”, which tells the story of a group of girls from a Catholic boarding school in a time of war and scarcity.

“Le Pupille,” which was written and directed by Italian director Alice Rohrwacher, will compete with “An Irish Goodbye,” “Ivalu,” “Night Ride” and “The Red Suitcase.”

For his part, “Negro” González Iñárritu, winner of four Oscars, arrives at this year’s ceremony with “Bardo”, which was nominated in the category of Best Photography and will compete with “Sin Novedad en el Frente”, ” Elvis”, “Empire of Light” and “Tár”.

“Bardo” is about a Mexican journalist and documentary filmmaker who returns to his country, where he is going through an existential crisis while dealing with his identity, his family relationships and his memories.

The Hollywood Academy announced Tuesday the nominations for the 95th Academy Awards, which will be announced March 12 at a ceremony hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel and aired on the Walt Disney Co.’s ABC network.

Winners will be voted on by nearly 10,000 actors, producers, directors and industry workers who make up the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
