FOXBOROUGH — Though he has only been with the New England Patriots for a week, new quarterback Tommy DeVito is already a welcome presence in the locker room.
DeVito, who earned the nickname “Tommy Cutlets” with the New York Giants, became a sensation late in the 2023 season when he led the team on a three-game winning streak that included a victory over New England.
According to quarterbacks coach Ashton Grant, DeVito has brought that same confident energy to Foxborough. “You can just tell he has that same Italian swagger. He comes in and he’s a Jersey kid for sure,” Grant said. “A lot of confidence. A lot of swagger. I like working with Tommy.”
The two first crossed paths six years ago when Grant was a quality control coach at Holy Cross and DeVito was the quarterback for Syracuse. Grant recalled the lopsided 41-3 loss, a game where DeVito threw four touchdown passes. “I just remember the swagger and the speed that he played with,” the coach said.
When Grant brought up their past matchup, DeVito’s response was predictably self-assured. “He just laughed at me,” Grant said. “He was like, ‘We already knew what it was going to be.’ But that’s just the confidence that he has, which I love.”
Grant added that DeVito also impressed during a preseason game, making him a target for the Patriots when he became available. “We were happy that we could add him to the room,” he said.
Embracing his new surroundings, DeVito spent his first weekend in Massachusetts attending St. Anthony’s Feast in Boston’s North End.
