With the MLB trade deadline just hours away, Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow is actively pursuing a power-hitting first baseman, with Tampa Bay Rays slugger Yandy Diaz identified as the team’s top target.
Multiple reports confirm Boston’s strong interest in Diaz, though a potential deal hinges on meeting Tampa Bay’s steep asking price, which is said to require either top-tier prospects or an established MLB player in return. The Red Sox are in the market for a first baseman after Triston Casas suffered a season-ending knee injury in May.
Diaz, 33, would provide an immediate offensive upgrade. Through 102 games this season, the right-handed batter is hitting .282 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs. His credentials include a 2023 American League batting title, an All-Star selection, and a Silver Slugger Award.
Beyond his on-field production, Diaz comes with attractive team control. He is making $12 million this season, with a $12 million club option for 2026 already picked up by the Rays. The contract also features a conditional $10 million club option for 2027, which vests at $13 million if he accumulates 500 plate appearances next year.
The Rays have already signaled they are sellers, having traded pitcher Zack Littrell to the Cincinnati Reds in a three-team deal on Wednesday. As the 6 p.m. ET deadline approaches, the possibility of acquiring Diaz remains, provided the Red Sox can assemble a compelling trade package.
