The three earthquakes that occurred in Mexico on September 19 do not have a scientific explanation, some attempts to approximate it in probabilistic terms show an almost negligible percentage, that is, as if it were an event almost impossible to happen, however, the magnitude of the losses human and material, as well as the emotional disturbances in many people who, after having suffered and lived through such painful events, in just 37 years, seek some explanation to calm their anxiety.
The economic damage estimated by some of the earthquakes in the country in the range of 6 to 8 points on the Richter scale from 1985 until September 19, 2017 amounts to 10,398 million dollars, about 208,000 million pesos, it is worth noting that they are only the most relevant and for which more or less homogeneous information is available, according to the National Center for Disaster Prevention and the Center for the Study of the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED for its acronym in English).
Until now, the most significant damages are those caused by the earthquake of September 19, 1985, which had as its epicenter the coast of Michoacán and a magnitude of 8.1 degrees on the Richter scale, with an estimate of 4,104 million dollars or 82,070 millions of pesos. The second earthquake of the most significant magnitude in economic terms occurred on the same day, but in 2017, whose estimated amount of damage is 3,285 million dollars or 62,099 million pesos, this telluric movement had Axochiapan, Morelos as its epicenter and an intensity of 7.1 degrees.
On April 4, 2010, the earthquake that had Mexicali, Baja California as its epicenter and an intensity of 7.2 on the Richter scale, caused damages of 1,150 million dollars. Another whose intensity was 8.2 degrees and with its epicenter in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, caused damages of 1,019 million dollars, to cite the most relevant in the last 37 years.
Yesterday, the national coordinator of Civil Protection (PC), Laura Velázquez, affirmed that from 1985 to 2021, the earthquakes that have occurred, in general, have left damages of about 356,000 million pesos.
What geologists say
In the context of Plate Tectonics, Mexico is located in the so-called Ring of Fire, where a large part of the telluric movements worldwide are recorded.
Our country is one of the nations in the world with the greatest telluric activity, according to statistical measurements, more than 90 earthquakes are recorded per year with a magnitude greater than 4 degrees on the Richter scale, which is equivalent to 60% of all movements earthquakes that are recorded in the world, according to the Government of Mexico City.
In 2021, the National Seismological Service registered 28,926 earthquakes in Mexico, of the total, most were of a magnitude between 3.0 and 3.9 points on the seismological scale.
