In his healthiest season since joining the Boston Red Sox in 2022, shortstop Trevor Story is showcasing his all-around talent and is on the verge of making franchise history on the basepaths.
Through 110 games, a high for his tenure in Boston, Story is batting .257 with 18 home runs. His strong play was recently recognized when he was named American League Player of the Week following a dominant start to August.
Story’s speed has been a key asset, and after stealing his 19th base of the season against the Kansas City Royals on Monday, he remains perfect on the year. He is now just one successful attempt shy of tying the franchise record for most consecutive stolen bases without being caught, set by shortstop Julio Lugo in 2007 with 20.
His 19 stolen bases are his most in a season since 2021 and are approaching his career high of 27, set in 2018 with the Colorado Rockies. Story’s flawless record on the basepaths highlights not just his speed, but his intelligent and selective approach to stealing, consistently avoiding costly outs for his team.
His pursuit of the record will continue against upcoming opponents. The Royals feature veteran catcher Salvador Perez, known for his strong arm, and pitchers Ryan Bergert and Michael Wacha, who are both rated as above-average at controlling the running game. Following the series, the Red Sox will travel to face the San Diego Padres, a team that has struggled to contain baserunners this season but recently acquired catcher Freddy Fermin to address the issue.
