CLEVELAND, Ohio – Browns running back Quinshon Judkins has waived his right to a speedy trial on a misdemeanor battery charge, a legal move that could delay his potential return to the team. The second-round draft pick is accused of repeatedly punching a woman during an argument in Broward County, Florida, last month.
The court filing means the case will not be required to go to trial within 175 days. While this is a routine step in most criminal cases to allow for the exchange of evidence, it could prolong the legal proceedings for Judkins, who remains unsigned and has already missed the entire preseason.
According to a police report, the incident was triggered by text messages Judkins received about the woman. He allegedly became enraged and punched her in the mouth, arm, and leg.
David Weinstein, Judkins’ attorney, told a judge last month that authorities have overstated the facts of the case. He also noted that the accuser stayed with Judkins for five days following the alleged assault before she contacted the police.
The report confirms the five-day delay, with the woman telling a Fort Lauderdale officer she “felt bad due to the recent success and career” of Judkins. She said she decided to come forward after “coming to the realization that something needed to be done.”
Judkins, 21, is free after posting a $2,500 bond. The NFL is expected to review the case under its personal conduct policy and could issue a suspension based on its own investigation, regardless of the legal outcome.
