- Renny Quow’s shoe came off as he came around bend in 4x400m relay heat
- He continued to run and finished ahead of USA’s 16-year-old Quincy Wilson
- Botswana and Great Britain took the top two, with the USA finishing third
Trinidad and Tobago sprinter Renny Quow lost one of his shoes during the men’s 4 x 400-metre relay heat at the Games.
The 36-year-old started off superbly and momentarily led the first leg before being overtaken.
As Quow came around the bend, one of his running trainers came flying off but he didn’t stop and continued his run before passing the baton.
Former Team GB athlete Denise Lewis said speaking on BBC: ‘You have to keep going and it reminds me a bit of Bryan Whittle back in the day when he ran the 4X400 leg and his shoe came off, but yeah it’s about the team’.
Despite being at a disadvantage, Quow managed to finish ahead of USA’s 16-year-old Quincy Wilson who had an Olympics debut to forget.

Wilson left the United States second-to-last in the race after running a first leg of 47.3 seconds.
That left Vernon Norwood, Bryce Deadmon, and Christopher Bailey needing to make up ground to qualify for the final.
They did just that, but it was only on the last leg that Bailey snuck into the top three to ensure safe passage to the grand stage.
Botswana and Great Britain finished ahead of the States as Thursday night’s 200m gold medalist Letsile Tebogo ran an extraordinary leg.
Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago finished last despite Quow’s fast start in the first leg.
