Jason Miller, an advisor to former US President Donald Trump, has announced that the latter will not testify as part of his trial, which begins next week in the Senate.
Miller said, “The president will not testify in an unconstitutional trial.”
The chancellor’s statement came after the Democratic prosecution team, Trump, was summoned to testify “under oath” in his impeachment trial, in connection with the attack by a crowd of his supporters on the Capitol building on January 6.
“I am writing to you to urge you to testify under oath, either before or during the Senate impeachment trial, regarding your behavior on January 6, 2021,” chief prosecutor Jimmy Raskin said in a letter to Trump that comes before the trial begins on February 9.
He added: “We suggest that you give your testimony, which will of course include an interrogation, between Monday 8 and Thursday 11 February.”
He continued, “We will be happy to organize the matter in a time and place suitable for everyone.”
Trump’s attorney responded to the letter in the same way, considering that asking their client to testify is part of a “public relations ploy.”
“Your letter merely confirms what is known to all: You cannot prove your allegations” against the former president, attorneys Bruce Castor and David Schwen added in their response to the Democratic Prosecution Team’s letter.
