US President Donald Trump has signed a decree stating that federal government buildings in the United States be “beautiful.”
The decree aims to do away with modern architecture and return to classicism.
But the decree sparked criticism from architects immediately after its draft appeared in February, as some critics ridiculed it, saying that he wanted to “make the federal buildings beautiful again,” referring to Trump’s famous electoral slogan from 2016.
Architectural critic Paul Goldberger said in an interview with the British newspaper “The Guardian” that the problem is not the classic style per se, but rather the determination of the official style by presidential decree, which is “inconsistent with liberal democracy in the 21st century.”
Goldberger considered Trump’s decree “largely symbolic” and that the outgoing president was trying to “throw another bomb on his way” before leaving the White House.
