Pennsylvania is hosting Republican rallies this weekend. Donald Trump And democracy Kamala HarrisWhile the results of a recent poll showed that Vice President Joe Biden has made significant progress days before the General National Congress of theDemocratic Party Who will officially announce her as his candidate for The White House.
The small town of Wilkes-Barre hosted Trump's campaign rally Saturday, while Harris is on a campaign tour of the state that includes several stops before heading to the Democratic Party convention scheduled to be held in Chicago starting tomorrow, Monday.
Trump began his rally by blaming Harris for unleashing what he called “devastating” inflation, one of the biggest issues in the campaign. Trump quickly mocked Harris’s laughter, calling her a “communist” and “crazy.” He also criticized a Time magazine cover photo of Harris, insisting that he “looks so much better than her.”
The momentum of the presidential race has shifted dramatically since the president's withdrawal. Joe Biden On July 21, Harris entered the race, galvanizing the Democratic Party's electoral base.
A New York Times/Siena University poll released Saturday showed Harris has put Democrats back in the race in four states that Trump was heading to easily beat Biden.
The Republican is struggling to find a way to stem Harris's rise, and the new poll is likely to further worry his campaign, with the vice president leading in Arizona and North Carolina, and closing the gap in Nevada and Georgia.
Trump will have to find new momentum at his rallies, after a series of seemingly lackluster rallies in Florida and at his golf club in New Jersey.
Criticism and skepticism
Trump's campaign statements focus on issues such as immigration and inflation, but the candidate devotes a large portion of his speeches to directing personal criticism at Harris, something that may not sit well with independent voters or those who are undecided in the Nov. 5 election.
“Hardworking Americans are suffering because of the Harris-Biden administration’s dangerous liberal policies,” the Trump campaign said in a statement ahead of the Wilkes-Barre rally.
“Prices are painfully high, the cost of living has increased dramatically, crime has risen dramatically, and illegal immigrants are pouring into our country,” the statement added, noting that recent tightening measures on the border with Mexico have largely halted the flow of illegal workers and asylum seekers.
In a statement to reporters on Thursday, Trump said he felt it was his “right” to continue to personally criticize Harris, the first black woman nominated for president by either of the two major parties in the United States.
Trump's criticisms include questioning Harris' intelligence and racial identity.
While polls show a tight race, swing states, particularly Pennsylvania, will decide the outcome under the US Electoral College system. Trump narrowly lost the state to Biden in 2020, but he has strong support in rural areas and small towns.
The vice president hopes to maintain her momentum heading into the Democratic National Convention, which will feature three days of speeches by party leaders, including Biden and former President Barack Obamabefore Harris delivers her acceptance speech on Thursday.
Economic accounts
As the election approaches, Harris is seeking to distance herself from unpopular Biden policies, defying Trump's attempts to brand her as a radical liberal.
Trump attacked Harris on Thursday, saying she had “strong communist leanings” and that this would “kill the American dream.”
Harris attended an event in North Carolina on Friday, where she unveiled proposals to ease the burden of inflation after the Covid pandemic. She noted that the US economy is booming, although she acknowledged that “many Americans are not yet feeling that progress in their daily lives.”
“Trump is fighting for millionaires and big corporations. I will fight to get money back to working Americans and the middle class,” she added.
