US President Donald Trump granted amnesty to George Papadopoulos, a former campaign aide who pleaded guilty to the charges against him in the investigation into allegations of interference by Russia in the 2016 elections.
Trump also pardoned Alex van der Zwan, who was sentenced to 30 days in prison and a $ 20,000 fine for lying to the investigators of US Special Adviser Robert Mueller about contacts with a 2016 Trump campaign official.

Papadopoulos was an advisor to the 2016 Trump campaign, and in 2017 he admitted to deceiving FBI agents about the timing and significance of his contacts with people who claimed they had ties to top Russian officials.
He served 12 days of a 14-day prison sentence in federal custody, then was released under supervision for 12 months.
The White House said Papadopoulos was accused of committing “a crime related to the process, which is the accusation of making false statements” as part of the Mueller investigation, which Trump denounced as a “witch hunt.”
“Today’s amnesty helps correct the mistake that Mueller’s team made on a lot of people,” the White House added.
