A senior US administration source told Reuters that outgoing President Donald Trump received the highest honor from Morocco on Friday for his help in reaching a normalization agreement with Israel.
In a special ceremony held in the Oval Office of the White House, Princess Lalla Jamala Alaoui, Morocco’s ambassador to the United States, presented Trump with the “Order of Mohamed”, an award that only heads of state can be given a gift from Morocco’s King Mohammed VI.
White House chief adviser Jared Kushner and US Middle East envoy Avi Berkowitz also received two awards for their work on the Israeli-Moroccan agreement reached in December.
The media was not allowed to attend the awards ceremonies.
During the last five months, the United States helped to conclude agreements between Israel, the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco aimed at normalizing relations and building economic ties.
