An official from the Philippine volcano agency has urged the public to remain calm and focus on preparation, acknowledging the “disaster fatigue” many are experiencing from recent typhoons, earthquakes, and minor eruptions.
“We ask Filipinos not to feel fearful,” said Dr. Teresito Bacolol at a press conference on Friday. “We have to prepare ourselves. We have to accept our reality that the Philippines is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire… Instead of panicking, we have to prepare.”
The Philippines’ high susceptibility to natural disasters is due to its location on the “Ring of Fire,” a zone of intense seismic and volcanic activity. This region marks the edges of major tectonic plates—massive slabs of rock forming the Earth’s surface—which are in constant motion. The Philippines sits at the convergence of several of these plates, leading to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity from its more than 20 active volcanoes.
