The center said that tsunami waves that could reach three meters in height would hit both Vanuatu and New Caledonia, the French archipelago in the Pacific Ocean.
He added that smaller tsunamis could reach countries very far from the epicenter, including Japan, Russia, Mexico and the southern coasts of the United States.
The center added that “tsunami waves were detected,” noting that measuring devices near Nukualofa, capital of Tonga, detected small high tsunamis, noting that tsunamis were getting stronger as they advanced in the water.
The newspaper “New Zealand Herald” said, today, Friday, that an urgent evacuation of the North Island is already taking place, and that thousands of residents are leaving their homes, which led to a stifling traffic jam.
The most recent earthquake was of 8 magnitude and hit the Kermadec Islands to the northeast of the North Island, and this earthquake occurred after another with a magnitude of 7.4 in the same area.
Earlier, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck about 900 kilometers to the east of the North Island, and was felt by thousands of residents, prompting the authorities to issue a tsunami warning, which was later lifted.
The National Emergency Response Agency also issued a new warning of tsunami waves after the latest earthquake, and ordered residents in some coastal areas to quickly go to higher places.
