Amnesty International has called for restraint after several days of protests in Tunisia that led to clashes with security forces and the firing of tear gas.
The organization released video footage showing members of the police beating and dragging the detainees, and said that the authorities should immediately release Hamza Nasri Jaredi, a human rights activist who was arrested on Monday.
Interior Ministry spokesman Khaled al-Hayouni said that the police arrested 632 people yesterday after riots across the country included looting and attacks on property.
