Tunisian Prime Minister Hicham El Mechichi sacked Environment Minister Mustafa Laroui, following the discovery of the arrival of consignments of household waste coming from Italy without a license.
The Tunisian government said in a statement: “The Prime Minister decided to exempt the Minister of Local Affairs and Environment, Mustafa Laroui, from his duties, and to assign the Minister of Equipment, Housing and Infrastructure, Kamal Doukh, to supervise the Ministry of Local Affairs and Environment on the behalf.”
At the beginning of last November, the Tunisian Ministry of Environment decided to open an administrative investigation after the arrival of 282 waste containers from Italy, which do not match the type of waste contained in the license of the private recycling company that imported them.
The director of the National Agency for Waste Management, Bashir Yahya, said in a previous statement: “During June and July, the customs in the coastal city of Sousse seized 282 waste containers that were supplied by a Tunisian private company.”
He added, “The Tunisian authorities decided to return the containers to Italy in July, but they are still in the port of Sousse.”
