Police forces in Siliana, northern Tunisia, on Friday fired tear gas canisters to disperse angry protesters after a policeman beat and insulted a shepherd.
Witnesses said that the protesters burned tires, blocked roads, and threw stones at police, while security forces chased the protesters and fired tear gas canisters.
A video clip posted on social media showed a policeman scolding and beating a shepherd who had passed some of his flock in front of the state headquarters.
The video clip sparked a wave of anger on social media, and activists said it was unacceptable to insult the dignity of any citizen after a decade of the revolution.
The Tunisian News Agency stated that, after a session was held at the state headquarters, the attacker, representatives of the Human Rights League, the Peasants’ Union, security unions and the head of the National Security District in Siliana pledged to socialize the young man and take the necessary legal measures.
The various security unions in the region submitted an official apology to the young peasant who was attacked.
