The Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights published a statement by a coalition of organizations in which the family of the late former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, frozen in Switzerland, was estimated at 320 million Tunisian dinars.

The aforementioned coalition of organizations accused the successive Tunisian governments, since Ben Ali fled to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia following the outbreak of the revolution in his country in 2011, of negligence, hinting at the absence of an official will to recover these assets from Swiss banks, as Tunisians demand. And considered the recovery of these funds a “moral duty” of the Tunisian state.
Among the organizations that signed the aforementioned statement include “Lawyers Without Borders”, “The Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights”, “The Tunisian Network for Transitional Justice” and “No Peace Without Justice.”
The publication of this statement came in a difficult circumstance, coinciding with the outbreak of violence on Saturday night to Sunday in several parts of Tunisia, during which violent clashes between young protesters and security forces and dozens of arrests, which may add fuel to the fire and complicate the difficult conditions the country is going through.
