A member of the campaign of Tunisian presidential candidate Ayachi Zemal said that Tunisian police arrested Zemal at dawn on Monday, hours before the electoral commission announced the final list of candidates accepted to run in the elections scheduled for next month.
Reuters quoted campaign member Mahdi Abdel Jawad as saying that police arrested Zamal from his home at 3 a.m. on suspicion of forging popular endorsements.
Abdul Jawad considered that “the matter has become absurd, and aims to exclude him (Zamal) from the elections,” as he put it.
The Tunisian authorities did not immediately comment on what the Zamal campaign member said regarding the candidate’s arrest.
