The security authorities in Turkey announced the arrest of 23 suspects on charges of bribery and extortion, including the former mayor of Ceyhan municipality in Adana Province, Kadir Aidar, who was suspended from his work last March.
An arrest warrant was issued against 23 people who were detained on charges of bribery and extortion, within the scope of the investigation, which was carried out in coordination with the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Ceyhan.
Security teams searched the municipality building and the addresses of the detained suspects, including the former mayor, Kadir Aidar, of the opposition Republican People’s Party.
A statement by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Ceyhan indicated that the detainees had been charged with “establishing an organization to commit a crime, bribery and extortion”.
The statement added, “The office has launched an investigation into allegations by some of the suspects working in the municipality, including the director of Ceyhan, who requested a bribe from businessmen in the area, based on deficiencies in zoning and licenses, based on instructions from the former mayor of Cihan.”
