Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman, Hami Aksoy, said in a statement: “The attacks on the Azerbaijani armed forces in Karabakh by members of the Armenian formations who refused to disarm and retreat represent a flagrant violation of the ceasefire regime declared in accordance with the tripartite statement issued on November 9th.”
Aksoy noted that “the attacks of the Armenian armed groups carried out on November 26, 8, 11 and 27 December resulted in deaths and injuries among the Azerbaijani military and the civilian population.”
Aksoy stressed that “Armenia, as a signatory of the tripartite statement, bears the primary responsibility for withdrawing all Armenian armed elements and their commitment to the ceasefire regime,” adding that “the Azerbaijani side responded in an appropriate manner to the provocations of the Armenian militants using their right to self-defense.”
He pointed out that “Armenia must, in the event of its interest in establishing stable peace in the region, recognize the new reality and implement the obligations it assumed in the framework of the tripartite statement.”
Earlier Monday, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense announced that one of its soldiers was killed in an attack by an Armenian armed group on one of the Azerbaijani forces’ stationing points in Karabakh, saying that the attackers were subsequently eliminated.
On November 9, the Russian Presidents Vladimir Putin, the Azerbaijani Ilham Aliyev, and the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, issued a joint statement stipulating the declaration of a ceasefire in the disputed Karabakh region between the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides, effective November 10.
Under this agreement, Azerbaijan, which is allied with Turkey, regained more than two-thirds of the lands it lost during the 1992-1994 war with the Armenian side.
