Reuters television footage showed that Turkey received the first shipment of the Chinese Sinovac vaccine for the Corona virus early this morning, Wednesday, about a week after Ankara announced that the vaccine was safe and effective based on the results of the third phase trials.
The first shipment of 3 million doses, part of a deal to supply 50 million doses, was initially scheduled to arrive on December 11th but ran into hurdles.
The first shipment of the vaccine was loaded into trucks from Esenboga International Airport in Ankara and transported to storage facilities of the Ministry of Health.
Turkish Health Minister Fakhruddin Kuja wrote on Twitter that the authorities will start vaccination after testing the vaccine, which may take 14 days.
On the other hand, Turkey agreed with Pfizer and Biontec to supply 4.5 million doses of their vaccine, while it is working on producing a local vaccine. It is also looking to produce the Russian (Sputnik V) vaccine locally.
