‘Mendy been watching Cech a little too closely in training’: Twitter goes wild after Chelsea goalkeeper nearly scores a horrendous own goal against Manchester United… mirroring club legend’s 2018 meltdown for Arsenal
Chelsea can’t seem to catch a break from goalkeeping drama, with even summer signing Edouard Mendy keeping Blues fans on the edge of their seats.
Frank Lampard confirmed Mendy has replaced west London flop Kepa Arrizabalaga as his new No 1 keeper after a £22m move from Rennes, and started against Manchester United on Saturday.
He almost made Lampard regret that decision 29 minutes into the Old Trafford clash, going horrendously close to scoring an own-goal.
Edouard Mendy gave Chelsea fans a big scare in the first-half against Manchester United
The Senegalese keeper’s ball across the box almost found its way into Chelsea’s own net
The Blues were cooly playing the ball across the back-line before Kurt Zouma rolled a pass back to the 28-year-old, who took a touch and looked to find Thiago Silva.
Instead Mendy mis-hit the ball which rolled across the face of goal, coming frighteningly close to the goal-line and out for a corner to the hosts.
The Senegalese star kept cool but Blues fans certainly didn’t, with @markstevens_cfc writing: ‘Did someone else feel that small heart attack produced by Mendy? Just asking…’

Petr Cech now works at a Chelsea advisor but ended his professional career at Arsenal
Arsenal fan @AFCDylan_ added: ‘Mendy been watching Cech a little too closely in training,’ pointed out the likeness to a scare the Chelsea legend had for the Gunners.
Now a director at the club, Cech ended his career with the Blues’ London rivals as his powers faded – an Emirates stint Gooners largely prefer to forget.
In Arsenal’s opening match of 2018-19 against Manchester City, Matteo Guendouzi knocked the ball back to Cech only for the Czech to scuff his pass aimed at Hector Bellerin, skimming to post even closer than Mendy’s effort.
