Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Twitter’s chief financial officer said on Wednesday that former US President Donald Trump will not be allowed to return to the Twitter platform even if he runs for the presidency again and wins.
In response to a question during an interview with CNBC whether Trump’s Twitter privileges could be restored if he won the presidency again, Ned Segal said that Trump’s ban would be permanent.
“The way our policies work, when you are removed from the platform, you are removed from the platform, whether you are a commenter, a CFO, or a former or current public figure. Remember that our policies are designed to ensure that people do not incite violence,” said Segal. And if anyone does that, we have to remove them from service and our policies do not allow people to return. “
The statement comes amid Trump’s impeachment trial in Congress, where if he is acquitted, Trump will not be prevented from running again for the presidency or any other federal position.
Twitter took the unprecedented step of banning Trump last month after some Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol. At the time, Twitter said it would permanently suspend Trump’s account “due to the risk of further incitement to violence.”
Twitter’s decision to ban Trump came amid a wave of measures taken by other technology companies against his accounts, including Facebook’s decision to prevent Trump from posting on the platform “indefinitely” and YouTube’s decision to start restricting Trump’s channel.
