Two investigative reports published by Al Jazeera Net last March and August respectively won the ARIJ 2023 Bronze Award equally, according to the results announced last night in the Jordanian capital.
Third place was won by an investigative report produced by Al Jazeera Net’s Close Journalism Unit and prepared by Syrian Kurdish journalist Hamza Hamki under the supervision of Syrian journalist Lujain Haj Youssef, entitled “Stolen Properties… How powerful people seize the properties of expatriates in Qamishli.” The investigation published on March 8 focuses on the forgery of dozens of sales contracts in Syria and the seizure of property belonging to Syrian expatriates worth millions of dollars in the Qamishli region in the far north of the country.
Also ranked third was an investigative report produced by the ARIJ network, “Arab Journalists for Investigative Journalism,” prepared by Tunisian journalist Jihan Nasri and supervised by Hanan Zabis, and published by Al Jazeera Net on August 26, under the title “The Farmers of Kasserine in Tunisia and “Sergaz”… a lease agreement that wastes rights. and resources.”
The investigation reveals the failure of the Tunisian company “Sergas”, which represents the Italian company Eni, to the demands of farmers in Tunisia to increase the rental price of the lands through which the gas pipeline coming from Algeria towards Italy passes, in addition to its failure to adhere to its promises regarding some development projects within the framework of its social responsibility.
Five days after Al Jazeera Net published the investigation, the Tunisian presidency issued a brief statement stating the termination of the duties of Moncef Matousi, president and general manager of the Tunisian Trans-Tunisian Pipeline Company, and president and general director of the Trans-Tunisian Gas Pipeline Services Company. The communication – which was published on the Tunisian presidency’s Facebook account – did not mention the reasons for the dismissal.
The gold award was won by the investigation “My secret journey to expose doctors who exploit patients like me” by journalist Ramadan Younis. It reveals cases of fraud carried out by clinics in Russia, the United States, and the Middle East that target Arab patients and promote expensive operations and treatments for patients with retinitis pigmentosa that are ineffective and sometimes cause complications that lead to poor vision or complete blindness.
The silver award went to the investigation “Prisoners of Recycling” by journalist Isis Kassem (pseudonym). It highlights the cases of 5 prisoners in Egypt who were rotated from one case to another without being accused of committing specific incidents in light of the violation of their rights as defendants. The investigation documents the Public Prosecution’s pursuit of conviction instead of searching for the truth.
The results of the competition, which is considered the most important in the field of Arab investigative journalism, were announced at the conclusion of the 16th annual ARIJ Forum, which was held over 3 days and in which hundreds of investigative journalists, experts and academics participated.
