Gabonese Prime Minister Rose Christine Osuka Raponda said on Friday that two people were killed in demonstrations against restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of the Coronavirus, and that it turned into confrontations.
On Thursday evening, security forces fired tear gas and sound bombs in some neighborhoods in the capital Libreville and Port Gentil City to disperse protesters who set up roadblocks and burned tires in the streets.
“Two citizens died yesterday evening during protests against preventive measures,” Raponda said in a statement.
Gabon imposed travel restrictions to and from the capital and increased curfew hours to slow the spread of the Coronavirus last week.
Gabon has recorded 13,107 cases of coronavirus and 75 deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.
The central African country is witnessing a second wave of infections, with an average of 133 new cases being recorded per day.
The restrictions will be eased when new infections fall below 50 per day, which should be achieved by March, Raponda said.
