I handed it over Uganda Nearly 100 Congolese police officers have fled across the border to the Kanungu area in southwestern Uganda to escape fighting between M23 rebels and the Congolese army, a Ugandan military spokesman said on Friday.
The spokesman said in a statement that the police officers were allowed to enter after verifying their identities, noting that this was done within a humanitarian framework and in line with international law. The spokesman explained that the officers concerned were handed over with their weapons and belongings.
The spokesman said refugees continued to stream across the Ugandan border, fleeing ongoing violence in eastern Congo.
The M23 movement has been waging an insurgency in eastern Congo, which has been plagued by militias, since 2022. In June, the M23 movement captured the high-altitude town of Kanyabayonga, making it a gateway to other parts of eastern Congo's North Kivu province.
The Congolese army has continued its attempts to repel the rebels over the past year using fighter jets and drones, but the rebels are still expanding the territory under their control.
The fighting in North Kivu has displaced more than 1.7 million people from their homes, bringing the total number of Congolese displaced by multiple conflicts to a record 7.2 million, according to UN estimates.
