Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – The United Kingdom’s Competition and Markets Authority, Boom, announced Thursday that it has opened an investigation into Apple’s practices after accusations from app developers that the company is “unfair and violates competition rules”.
The UK’s organized investigation follows “several developers who have reported that Apple’s terms and conditions are unfair and could violate competition law,” according to a statement from the UK Competition and Markets Authority.
Andrea Coselli, chief executive of the Capital Markets Authority, said, “Complaints that Apple is using its position in the market to set unfair conditions that may restrict competition and choice – which could cause customers to lose out when purchasing and using applications – require careful scrutiny.”
The authority also said that this is only the beginning of the investigation, noting that no decision has been taken so far on whether “Apple” violates the law.
“We believe in thriving and competitive markets where any great idea can thrive,” Apple said in response to the investigation. “The App Store has always been an engine of success for app developers, partly because of the strict standards we apply – and are applied fairly to all developers – to protect customers.” “We look forward to working with the UK Competition and Markets Authority to explain how our guidelines for privacy, security and content have made the App Store a trusted marketplace for both consumers and developers.”
