LONDON, Jan 14 (Reuters) – Britain and the European Union said on Friday they would step up talks to resolve post-Brexit trade issues, with British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss saying a deal must be reached.
After receiving the vice-president of the European Commission, Maros Sefcovic, for “good talks”, Truss said that he wanted to advance in the resolution of the problems of application of the rules that govern trade between the United Kingdom, the British province of Northern Ireland North and Ireland, member of the EU.
“What I want is a negotiated solution, I think an agreement can be reached. We have had constructive talks over the last day,” Truss told reporters.
Officials from both sides will meet now to intensify talks next week, before Truss and Sefcovic hold another meeting on Jan. 24.
“Now is the time to start taking things off the table,” Sefcovic said on Twitter (NYSE:).
Truss last month took charge of long-running negotiations to resolve disagreements over post-Brexit trade rules for Northern Ireland, which London signed on to but now says are not feasible in practice.
To avoid controversial border controls between Ireland and Northern Ireland, Britain and the EU agreed that the province would remain within the bloc’s customs union for goods, and there would be checks on goods moving between Britain and Northern Ireland.
The EU claims to have proposed solutions to reduce customs paperwork and controls on agri-food products, but London says it does not want a system that allows controls on goods that circulate only within the United Kingdom, and does not want an arbitration role for the European Court of Justice of the EU.
