The Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science said that a large-scale cyber-attack had targeted government sites, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emergencies.
The ministry announced on its Facebook page that its official website was “temporarily closed due to the massive attack that occurred on the night of January 14.”
It was also impossible to access the websites of other ministries, including the Ministry of Emergency Situations, according to what was reported by Agence France-Presse.
The ministry added that the attack was claimed by the “Ukrainian ultra-nationalist Onopa” organization.
A spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said on Twitter that they are working to restore systems after the massive cyber attack that targeted government sites.
In turn, the Ukrainian intelligence service announced – in a statement – that the major information attack did not result in any leakage of personal data, confirming the start of investigations.
The European Union said it was mobilizing “all its resources” to help Ukraine in the wake of the attack on government websites.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell confirmed that representatives of the European Union’s Political and Security Committee would hold an urgent meeting to discuss the attack, which he said “deserves condemnation”.
