The United States Government granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for a period of eighteen months to Afghans already in the country, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported Wednesday to through a statement.
In the text, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said that “this TPS designation will help protect Afghan citizens who have already been living in the United States from returning to unsafe conditions.”
“Under this designation, TPS will also provide additional protections and assurances to trusted partners and vulnerable Afghans who have supported US military, diplomatic, and humanitarian missions in Afghanistan over the past 20 years,” he added.
The TPS, detailed the department, will apply only to those people who already reside in the United States, before March 15, 2022 and meet all other requirements, including background and security checks, and will be available to 72,500 Afghans. who were admitted under what is known as “humanitarian parole.”
Venezuela, El Salvador, Honduras and Haiti, among other countries, already receive this migratory protection. that protects against deportation and gives access to a work permit to irregular migrants who cannot return to their country.
