An unlikely Australian city has been dubbed the ‘new Bali’ as eager travellers free to move between states begin flocking to the outback oasis.
The small town of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory has emerged as the one of the most popular tourist spots after fan-favourite locations like Bali and Thailand remain off the cards amid an international travel ban.
Travel company Skyscanner released a report on Wednesday and found Alice Springs was now rivalling the pristine beaches of the Gold Coast, Cairns and the Whitsundays as winter approaches.

The travel destinations of Proserpine and the Whitsundays in Queensland took the top two spots but the unlikely contender of Alice Springs came in third.
The report said Australians are now trading in destinations like Phuket and Bali for local getaways like Alice Springs and even Darwin came in fourth place.
Darwin has also been dubbed the ‘new Milan’ and Athens by replacing European countries as the second most popular tourist spot for couples and groups.

Experts aren’t counting on international travel to be completely back up and running for Australians until 2024.
The Far North Queensland town of Cairns retained its top spot as the most popular travel destination for families, couples and groups.
The Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Darwin, Port Douglas, the Whitsundays, Hobart, Broome, Townsville and Port Douglas followed closely behind.
In comparison the international locations of Fiji, Rome, Milan, Santorini and Las Vegas dominated the wish lists of travellers back in 2019.
Skyscanner surveyed more than 1,000 Australians over the course of 13 months to tabulate the results.
