Ethylene oxide exposure can cause local irritation of the skin, eyes, and upper respiratory tract, affect the nervous system and in extreme long-term cases with continued exposure to the chemical has also been associated with increases in cancer rates, according to NSW Health.
The man-made chemical is primarily used to create anti-freeze and polyester and to sterilise medical equipment and supplies.
‘Consumers should not consume this product and should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund,’ Food Standards Australia said on Monday.
The product was sold in Woolworths in New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and Queensland.
Coles customers in New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and Queensland are also warned not to consume the product.
IGA stores in New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia have also been warned.
