US attorneys in New York are investigating the collapse of FTXsaid a source with knowledge of the situation, after the cryptocurrency exchange filed for bankruptcy protection last week following a spate of customer withdrawals.
The Justice Departmentthe Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission they are now investigating how FTX handled client funds while Alameda Research, the proprietary trading company of FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, fell apart, the source said.
FTX faced an apparent liquidity crisis after using client funds to support Alameda.
The SEC investigation is also targeting FTX executives in the company’s handling of client funds and any possible violations of securities laws, a second source said.
The US Attorney’s Office in Manhattan, the SEC and the CFTC declined to comment. FTX did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
FTX’s bankruptcy followed the failure of a bailout deal with rival exchange Binance, and now FTX is facing scrutiny from US regulators for its handling of client funds, as well as its crypto-lending activities.
