US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin thanked Germany for hosting US forces on the country’s soil, amid expectations that the new US administration would backtrack on plans to withdraw its forces from Germany.
“Minister Austin expressed his gratitude to Germany for continuing to host American forces,” the Pentagon said in a statement following the phone call between Austin and German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karenbauer.
A US official, who requested anonymity, revealed to “Reuters” that Austin assured the German minister that the United States would coordinate its subsequent steps with Germany.
The Pentagon plans to review the stationing of US forces around the world, including the decision of former President Donald Trump to withdraw part of US forces from Germany.
Trump’s plan calls for withdrawing about 6 thousand American soldiers from Germany and redeploying them to other regions.
