The US Department of Labor said 261,000 jobs were created in October, higher than expected, compared to 315,000 in the previous month.
A Reuters poll of 81 economists had forecast job creation to fall to 200,000.
The US jobless rate rose to 3.7% from a level of 3.5%, according to the Labor Department, against a forecast of 3.6 percent.
As for the indicator of median hourly wages, it rose 0.4% in October.
The forecast was for an increase of 0.3 percent.
