The commander of the US forces in South Korea, General Robert Abrams, indicated that “vaccination against the Corona virus is optional, and it will be available to the rest of the personnel of the forces after the arrival of more supplies.”
He stressed that “vaccination against the Corona virus is another tool that helps the American forces to maintain a strong and integrated defense posture.”
This is with the knowledge that the US military, yesterday, Monday, carried out the first round of vaccination against the Corona virus for its forces at the “Yokota” Air Base in Japan.
The US Forces Command in South Korea also indicated that the first doses of the vaccine were used to vaccinate medical care workers, including the military, civilians, and senior leaders of the force, which has about 28,500 military personnel, as well as thousands of civilian workers and their families.
For its part, South Korea intends to start its general vaccination program next February, as the priority will be for medical personnel and vulnerable groups, while the government has been criticized, given that vaccination has already started in the United States and the European Union.
The office of the South Korean President, Moon Jae-in, said that he had contacted the CEO of Moderna, Stephan Bansel, with the aim of confirming the country’s intention to conclude an agreement to secure doses of a vaccine against Corona from Moderna, sufficient to vaccinate 20 million people.
South Korean officials also promised to speed up the launch of a vaccination program after detecting a new strain of the virus, which is related to a rapid rise in infections in Britain.
South Korea recorded 1,046 new cases of Coronavirus during the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections there to 58,725 cases, while health officials in Seoul said that the country recorded a record number of daily deaths with this virus, reaching 40 deaths.
